Onlive - I am kinda impressed!

Postby Chukkz » Thu Nov 18, 2010 6:11 am

After Zero told me that Onlive, the streaming game service, now apparently works in europe I needed to check it out. For those who do not know what it is:

Onlive lets you play games but with a twist, the game runs not on your computer but on their servers, the content gets streamed to your PC which allows the games to run on the highest settings available by default. They sell a console for your TV but you can also just use your everyday computer... and now the good thing: Since you do not actually "run" the game on your PC you do not need a highend machine anymore. The biggest issue for this system though is the latency, with a low latency everything is cool but if you are too far from their server then the game slowly gets sluggish in response which apparently is the reason they only launched it officially for the US.

Onlive now seems to plan a launch for europe either as we could connect to the service today and check it out. I gotta say though I was kind of sceptical at first that I am impressed. My fairly mediocre setup could run Shaun White Skateboarding almost flawlessly in 60 fps even though there was lag. Dirt 2 which I also own on Steam is not that playable due to the lag and the sensitive controls I suppose and that was all I could check out before the system kicked us europeans out with the little hint that our latency is too high. ;)

But I really got to say: Guys if you can pull this off in a good way both for you and for your customers you have a little winner there. The fact that I could play Just Cause 2 on my old setup here seems impressive to me (Will try to check it out later if the system lets me).

you mean sega channel i bet

btw onlive lets you try out any game in there library for 30 minutes for free /endlessly)
but if you wan to play and save your progress you can either

buy a 3 or 5 day pass or buy the game indefenetly

we run on a 45 Mbit/s connection and the thing is impressive, we could actually run and play the games, there was tincy lag but i had local games that were waay worse (sonic adventure im looking at you)

O.o I revert my verdict... This service is evil!
...

I REALLY WANT DARKSIDERS NOW! T________T

Seriously all those companies who never release PC demos do not know how much they miss a chance on getting people hooked just by letting them play it a bit.
