Although this does look... kinda cool.

Yep, Hansel and Gretel are badass witch killers. But hey... Jeremy Renner! Yumminess!

Can't be worse than the Brothers Grimm.

Well, I suppose it CAN... but I'm not going to pass judgement until I see it. *L*

I didn't watch the trailer, but the idea of hansel and gretel as a movie actually sounds like it could be really good

Finally saw this last night.

I'll be honest; it's not Oscar material by any stretch of the imagination. But... it was a decent movie.

I think part of the problem Hollywood has had in the past with fairy tale remakes (of a sort) is that they either kept far too much of the cutesy shit in (Mirror, Mirror) or they departed so far from the original story that almost nothing was left of the original story (Snow White and the Huntsman). But this movie kept just enough whimsy to make it amusing while still providing a logical (heh) progression to show how things got to be the way they are. Granted, they gloss over most of that by showing the majority of how Hansel and Gretel become cynical, leather-clad, cursing-like-sailors badass witch hunters in the form of oddly animated sequences showing random newspaper articles during the opening credits, but they do offer reasons for it. There was a little (okay, a LOT) more gore than I was expecting (was a tad shocked when a troll literally steps on and squashes some asshole's head, for instance), but the remainder of the movie was filled with some genuinely funny moments and some pretty cool action sequences. I particularly enjoyed one sequence wherein Hansel, who apparently grew up without having gotten laid or something, tries and somewhat fails to act cool around this chick who willingly strips down for him in order to "heal" him (hah!). Plus, I got to see him mostly naked in that scene (CURSE YOU WATER REFRACTION!!! CURSE YOU I SAY!!!).

Ultimately I'd be willing to recommend this movie. It was funny and had an interesting plot (Famke Jannsen plays villains very well, in my opinion), and enough eye candy to give anyone, male or female, respective wank material.
