Late night double creature feature!!

Postby Bri » Sat Mar 26, 2011 7:10 pm

Decided to spend some time watching movies today.

You might recall I said I bought Sharktopus (and if I didn't say it before, now you know), the Sy-Fy original movie about a shark/octopus hybrid that terrorizes the waters off of Puerto Vallarta. Trailer below, if you haven't seen it:

I swear to you, I have never laughed so hard at a sci-fi/horror film in my entire life. I don't know what Sy-Fy was trying to do when they made this movie, but if their intent was to create what essentially amounts to a giant flop, they succeeded. Badly rendered CGI monsters? Not scary. Not scary at all.

After I picked myself up off of the floor and my ribs stopped aching from laughter, I decided I'd pop in the movie that Sharktopus was essentially ripped off from. MST3K had it in an episode that I luckily had purchased, so it was readily available; plus, hilarious side commentary always a plus. The movie was Devil Fish; trailer below.

This movie was notable mainly for the many gratuitous side boob shots as well as numerous male butts in tight shorts, and notably (although thankfully screened out for television audiences) one ball sack shot. And no, I'm not kidding. The Devil Fish itself wasn't scary either; giant rubber monsters aren't usually any more scary than badly rendered CGI monsters. And it was hilariously funny to try and see Italian actors try to make you believe they were Americans from Florida.

Any of ya'll watched any good creature features lately?

Can't says I have, least not recently. But it seems like every month or so, Sy-Fy (hate their new spelling, btw) puts out one. THere was a piranna one a while back, wasn't too bad.

Course, the classic creature feature would have to be Creature from the Black Lagoon. Been ages since I saw it tho

I've been thinking it might be a good idea to try and find a bunch of those old creature features on DVD; I'm sure they've been released somewhere.

You can find all the old classics on Amazon. And searching "Creature Feature" will get you a few "collections" - usually a bunch of B/or worse rated movies on one dvd

Hell's yes. Thats the best way to do it.

A buddy of mine and I went to a showing of some old horror filck. Don't much remember what it was (this was a few years back). Might have been "killer clowns from outer space" (there were clowns involved, i remember that).

Anyways, there were about 5 of us in the movie theater. Me, My friend, and three other guys we'd never met. We all decided to sit together, and rip the movie the whole time. It was great

So I'm resurrecting this thread (sort of) because of an article I read on Cracked recently that reminded me of how I had intended to find movies produced by Roger Corman. (If you're curious about the article, click here)

Being the savvy internet shopper I am, I found out that Shout Factory (purveyors of all things MST3K) carries most of them, so I bought a selection of them, including one with a fairly disturbing scene where... ummm... how should I put this... oh hell, I'll be blunt; a girl gets both raped and killed by a giant maggot.

If you want to see the scene more or less by itself without watching the movie (which is called Galaxy of Terror, by the way), you can go here and see it (warning: booby shots make video NSFW). It's not so much the whole rape by a giant maggot thing that makes this so disturbing though. No, what makes it disturbing is that as her clothing disintegrates and the maggot's tentacles grope grotesquely all over her, the actress's terrified screams start to become orgasmic moans of pleasure.

Yes, you read that right; the character begins to enjoy being raped by a space maggot.

I have come to the conclusion, after reading that article and watching the whole movie, which I bought along with the original version of Pirahna as well as a "Sword and Sorcery" collection containing Deathstalker one and two, Barbarian Queen, and the Warrior and the Sorceress, that Roger Corman is the creepiest person to ever produce a film. He's like the John Waters of crappy sci-fi and horror films; and John Waters, as far as I know, wasn't quite so fixated on boobs and sexual overtones, so that may make Corman worse than him.

In all honesty, that one scene is the only thing that makes this movie at all watchable, in a disturbing, what-the-hell-is-wrong-with-me kind of way; the plot is tissue-thin and makes little or no sense, and the whole movie is basically a collection of scenes where they try to come up with ever more grotesque ways of killing the actors and actresses. A young Robert Englund (pre-Freddy Krueger days) ends up being one of only two survivors of the massacre; the other guy I have no bloody clue who he is. Regardless, if you're a fan of crappy sci-fi, this definitely fits the bill. Dunno if I'd RECOMMEND it, mind you, but it's definitely crappy sci-fi. With boobs.

Heh...heheh,,hahahahaha. yea, Galaxy of Terror. I remember that movie. Disturbing, lacking plot, maggot sex. Yup. Also featured Sid Haig, which is always fun in its own way. We did a Roger Corman night about half a year ago. I want to say he had something to do with Star Crash as well, but I cant recall.

Found a bunch of Roger Corman's movies on DVD, as well as a collection of 12 Creature Features while at Best Buy recently.

I am a happy girl.

Okay, here's the list:

From 12 Creature Features;
-Attack of The Monsters
-Bride of the Gorilla
-The Crater Lake Monster
-The Creeping Terror (also known as the movie where people helpfully crawl inside the monster's mouth, as famously riffed on MST3K)
-Gamera The Invincible (AKA the Godzilla rip-off that became rather popular)
-Horror High
-Horror of the Zombies
-Horrors of Spider Island (AKA the movie where being stranded on an island means you automatically become a languid, sex-starved woman)
-Kong Island
-Land of the Minotaur
-Snowbeast
-The Wasp Woman

From the Roger Corman collection;
-Attack of the Giant Leeches
-The Wasp Woman (yes, the same as the one above, but I'm not going to let a repeated movie keep me from getting an awesome B-movie collection)
-Creature from the Haunted Sea
-A Bucket of Blood
-Last Woman on Earth
-The Little Shop of Horrors (not the version with Rick Moranis either, but interestingly it DOES have Jack Nicholson in an early role in his career)
-The Terror
-Dementia 13 (AKA the movie that sparked Francis Ford Coppola's career thanks to Roger Corman)
-She Gods of Shark Reef
-Swamp Women

I also picked up a collection of 50 Horror movie classics while on the same trip which has some AWESOME classic movies in the collection. We're talking some greats of horror movie actors here; Lon Chaney Sr., Vincent Price, Bela Lugosi, and Boris Karloff to name a few. It includes stuff like The Phantom of the Opera (the silent version with Lon Chaney), The Bat (Vincent Price), The Brain That Wouldn't Die, the original House on Haunted Hill (which I owned already, but again, not letting a repeated movie stop me from getting a killer collection of great movies), Night of the Living Dead (the original by George Romero), Nosferatu (Max Schreck), The Screaming Skull, and White Zombie (not the band, the movie). There are several other repeats, but I honestly don't care; there are some CLASSIC films here that a true movie aficionado would love to have.

So I found some movies that, if this is possible, are even STUPIDER than Sharktopus. I think.

I give you... Sand Sharks. "Starring", if that's the term, Brooke Hogan.

Yes, we have sharks... that swim... in sand. Setting aside the impossibility of THAT little tidbit... how the holy fuck do they BREATHE is what I want to know.

And even better (or worse, depending on your perspective):

Two-Headed Shark Attack. Again, "starring" Brooke Hogan and Carmen Electra's boobs... I mean Carmen Electra.

Amazingly enough... Roger Corman has nothing to do with EITHER of these films. Shocking, I know.

Nope.

He had nothing to do with either of them. I just checked his filmography on IMDB; no credit for either of these. I didn't think it was possible, but apparently there's worse than Roger Corman out there. May God have mercy on us all.

You mean Rubber?

Haven't seen it yet, so I can't speak to whether or not it's stupider than Corman's flicks, but the two I gave above definitely are.
